1. Core parameters determine the basis for selection

Pitch

Definition: The theoretical distance (in inches) that a propeller propels a boat in one rotation.

Selection principles:

High pitch (such as 21"-25"): suitable for light-loaded speedboats, pursuing high speed, but slow acceleration.

Low pitch (such as 13"-17"): suitable for heavy-loaded fishing boats or towing operations, fast acceleration, but low maximum speed.

Diameter

The larger the diameter, the stronger the thrust, but it needs to match the upper limit of the main engine power (too large may be overloaded).

For example: 40-70HP models usually use 10"-12" diameter, and 150HP and above require 14"+.

Number of blades

3 blades: general purpose, balancing speed and maneuverability.

4 blades and above: improve traction, reduce vibration, suitable for heavy loads or sea fishing boats.

2. Matching boat type and usage scenario
Boat type/purpose Recommended propeller characteristics Brand reference model
Leisure speedboat/water skiing High pitch 3 blades (emphasis on high speed) Yamaha Saltwater Series, Mercury Vengeance
Commercial fishing boat/heavy load transportation Low pitch 4 blades (strong thrust + stability) Suzuki DF Prop, Tohatsu MFS
Duckling boat/small work boat Small diameter aluminum alloy propeller (economical and durable) Honda General Duty, Mercury Aluminum
Saline waters/anti-corrosion requirements Stainless steel material + anti-rust coating Yamaha Stainless, Suzuki Stainless
3. Mandatory inspection indicators: engine operating conditions
Rated speed range
At full throttle, the engine must reach the maximum operating speed marked on the nameplate (such as 5000-6000 RPM).

Speed is too low → Change to a lower pitch (reduce load)

Speed is too high → Change to a higher pitch (increase load)

Cavitation prevention

Blade edge damage or bubble noise indicates cavitation, and you need to check:

Is the propeller installation height too high?

Is the blade deformed/damaged?

4. Material selection: balance performance and cost
Material Advantages Disadvantages Applicable scenarios
Aluminum alloy Lightweight, low cost, impact resistance Easy to bend, short life Freshwater environment/small boats
Stainless steel High strength, high efficiency, corrosion resistance High price, difficult to repair Seawater/high-performance ships/commercial use
Composite materials Shock reduction and noise reduction, moderate cost performance Low ultimate strength Medium and low-speed leisure boats
5. Professional selection service support
Tianjin Kaiyueda provides full-process guarantee for your propeller selection:
✅ Free technical consultation: customized solutions based on your boat type, load, and engine model.
✅ Original parts database: accurate matching of original codes of brands such as Yamaha and Honda (such as Yamaha 6E5-45971-00-00).
✅ Trial matching service: test propellers can be provided to verify performance and avoid losses from wrong purchases.

Warm reminder: After replacing the propeller, be sure to record the maximum speed and top speed during sailing so that we can further optimize the recommendation!
